Frustration that I can’t make her understand makes my heart ache. The drumming of her footsteps, beats away. They hammer down the corridor to echo in the big hallway. I’m relieved when I hear her start up stairs. I was afraid she would run outside. You can’t go out of this house without knowing your way around.

One wrong step and you can be in the swamp. People nearby go missing all the time. The gators around here are massive.

I can’t stand to leave her in pain, and I hate that she’s misunderstood my intention.

She needs some time to calm down, although calming down is not one of her obvious strengths. I’ve already decided that I will work here for today. There’s more than enough for me to do. But I’ll take a table in the little reception off the hallway. I don’t want her going out without me knowing.

Seeing her body when her robe fell open has left a picture in my mind that I will keep forever. My cock is still rigid and heavy, and it shows no sign of going down. It’s awkward in my pants as I take my coffee and my laptop to the bright reception room.

I’ll put some food on a tray and take it up for her in an hour or so. Leave it outside her door if she doesn’t want to open it. When Rocco sends clothes for her from the couturiers this afternoon, I’ll have him send some trusted men, too. I want men I can trust, outside the house and inside.

The bargain with the senator is not the reason I’m keeping her. I got what I needed from him, the moment he signed the paper. A copy of that emailed to the media and his political career would be over by sundown.

I’m keeping her because I need to protect her and keep her safe. That seems like the first clean and decent instinct I’ve had in such a long time. Maybe ever. I’m not ready to think about what it means for the future. Having her here, knowing that she is in this house, lights me up inside.

The fact that we’re here, in what is effectively a jungle fortress, makes it feel like a space out of time. A refuge. Well, I hope she can relax and this can be an oasis for her.

I have things to do.

McGruder’s call means I need to be alert. Nobody knows about this place as far as I know, but I can’t take any chances. What I talked about with Danny worries me most. There’s a viper in my fucking nest.
